SB 1369 Destroys Electronic Bingo and Charities
Senate Bill 1369 is a special interest bill pushed by Native American tribal casinos to limit competition. The bill is designed to destroy successful electronic bingo games that support dozens of critical charities. Rushed through the California Legislature in just 11-days, SB 1369 was one of the most controversial bills of 2008. Despite intense criticism of the measure, Gov. Schwarzenegger signed the bill into law, jeopardizing essential charity programs that help needy students, athletes, homeless youth, seniors, veterans and the disabled. CCBA believes the law will eventually be overturned by the courts because the electronic bingo machines are required under the American’s with Disabilities Act. The electronic machines provide Californians with disabilities the opportunity to enjoy a game they would otherwise be unable to play.
